How to Measure Fish Length
Total length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail with the fish laid flat, mouth closed and tail lobes pressed together.

How much did that fish weigh?

You can easily estimate the weight of your released fish by using the following formula. Take the length in inches and multiply it by itself three times. Divide the total by the following number for each species. For walleye, divide by 2700, for northern or muskie divide by 3500, and for black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) divide by 1600.

Example :A 20-inch largemouth bass is 20x20x20 (20x20=400, 20x400=8000). divide by 1600=5. You just released a 5-pound largemouth bass that can both reproduce and offer other anglers the opportunity for a memorable fight.
